obsolete

Obsolescence is inextricably linked with capitalism and its modes of production. It has been instrumental in pushing production, and planned obsolescence (first introduced in the car industry in the 1920s) has become so dominant that progress and obsolescence are often seen as the direct cousins of technological development. As the domain of digital information technology increased in importance, the life cycles of products (including software) became shorter. More and more formats and products, as well as modes of production, have now become obsolete.

The obsolete, whether willed or inadvertent, implies a dysfunction. Links to the present are in some way ruptured, either technologically, for instance when playback devices, software, or other equipment are no longer in use, or socially, when lines of thought, fashion, or ideologies are no longer pertinent or have receded into obscurity.

It is this implication of dysfunctionality and its critical (and comical) potential, which perhaps prompted some of the artists in this show to adopt production modes that are seen as outmoded – like polaroids, super 8 and 16 mm film, old programming languages. They were deliberately chosen, with tongue in cheek and in dead earnest, for their history and specific properties. In effect, they reversed the process of planned obsolescence.

Others have included interactive computer works that were created with programs and programming languages that were considered cutting edge at the time of their making, but are now discontinued and can only be run on vintage hardware (picture artist looking distraughtly at commodore 64 computer). Still others examine social manifestations of obsolescence, like the crumbling and dismantling of political systems, or move toward a wild science fiction with devotional undertones where humanity has become obsolete to the point that humans are confused with wasps.

This show aims to explore obsolescence – in theory art’s antithesis. Sort of. And then to look at the world through that distorted mirror.

ABOUT 5X5 and TIGER STRIKES ASTEROID

Tiger Strikes Asteroid is pleased to announce 5×5, a series of exhibitions in Berlin that nurture communication between cultures and explore the dialogue, creativity, invention, and cultural impact that defines artist-run spaces. The Berlin spaces will subsequently exhibit their member work in the USA at their partner TSA space in 2023.

The title for the first part of the exchange, when the American artists exhibit in Berlin, is Meanwhile, We Are Here. This title emerged from the organizers’ discussions around the present moment as well as the importance of connection and community. Throughout 2020 and 2021, we have had to reckon with the realities of loss, isolation, nationalism, and individualism. As a result, we decided to focus this exhibition exchange on connection, memory, and visions for the future. We thought about two signifiers: the time capsule and the wormhole. The time capsule represents archives, selection, hidden histories to be revealed at a later time, future relics. Like the time capsule, the wormhole connects points in time, simultaneous occurrences, and differing realities. Both are time machines, capable of compressing the past, present, and future. The title also relates to functioning as an artist during times of upheaval; we persevere in making work, our practices become entwined with events in the wider world. Each TSA site will have the freedom to interpret the theme of Meanwhile, We Are Here in any way they wish.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid is a 501c3 non-profit network of independently programmed, artist-run exhibition spaces with locations in Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Greenville, SC. Our goal is to collectively bring people together, expand connections and create community through artist-initiated exhibitions, projects, and curatorial opportunities.

We are excited to present six exhibitions, a performance, and a film night as part of the exchange.
